Matilda Pig Traditional Rare Breed Meats from Glebe Farm has won a Gold and Silver award in the National Competition run by BPEX to support this year's British Sausage Week.

Its gold award was for its home produced speciality ‘pork with red onion’ sausage.

As one of over 300 entrants in the National Competition celebrating British Sausage Week, we entered both our own recipe breakfast and speciality sausage. The Breakfast sausage was awarded Silver.

This is a great achievement for a pedigree pork producer. We concentrate on a quality niche product, with our own range of sausage and bacon and a firm customer favourite; faggots.

Self taught butcher, Kevin Johnson made the sausages and described the award as ‘awesome’. He said’ I only started making sausages just over a year ago when my partner Lisa, persuaded me to volunteer and help out. Since then it has become a passion and I just want us to get better and better. I am so proud to get this award.’

‘The fact that pedigree pork can compete and win these awards is very important for pedigree pork producers. Many are nervous about taking on commercial producers but when you are working with a quality product in the meat we produce, we should not be shy in having a go.’ said Chris Coe, Chair of BPA Pedigree Pork Committee.

Glebe Farm will try other specialist entries at the BPEX regional heats over the coming months. As Kevin added ‘Practice makes perfect and unless I compete I can’t improve.’
